In 1694 it took the joint efforts of Governor Johan Lorentz and his nephew, the founder of the Castenschiold dynasty, to send the first production of rum to Europe from the former Danish island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean, one of the first places of rum production, initiated by the Danish West Indies Company.
